Kansas DUI Car Accident Lawyer Weighs In On DUI Statistics

An article released recently by Bankrate suggests that DUIs are on the rise. Attorney Paul Hogan with the Law Center for Car Accident Injuries in Wichita, Kansas recently weighed in on those new statistics, calling them a "major concern."

The study found that while the number of motorists being stopped and/or arrested for drunk driving has decreased over the past year, the number of drug impaired driving has not. In fact, according to a report issued by the Foundation for Advancing Alcohol Responsibility and the Governors Highway Safety Association, more than 40 percent of all fatally injured drivers in the past year have tested positive for illicit drug use. This is nearly the same number as those who are testing positive for being under the influence of alcohol.

"It's a vicious cycle," states Hogan. "And one that needs to end. Innocent people are being hurt by those who are carelessly getting behind the wheel of an automobile when they are too impaired to drive."

According to the GHSA, there are hundreds of drugs being used, and all of them can have different effects on driving. Identifying the fact that a driver has been using drugs is much more difficult than identifying a driver who has been drinking. Experts state that there are more than 400 specific drugs in the national highway safety database for fatalities, and that testing for these drugs takes time. While an officer may know that a driver is impaired, it can often take weeks to find out why they are impaired.

More than 60 percent of all fatally injured drivers in 2013 tested positive for drug use. Of the drivers tested, more than 30 percent were found to have at least one of the more than 400 drugs in the database, in their system, and nearly 40 percent had marijuana in their systems.

"We have to take the steps necessary to stop people from driving impaired," states Hogan. "People are getting hurt, innocent people, and their lives are being torn completely apart."
