Xarelto Lawsuit Claims Ohio Woman’s Severe Gastrointestinal Bleed Was Caused By The Drug

BloodThinnerHelp.com reports on a lawsuit filed against the manufacturers Bayer AG and Janssen Pharmaceuicals (a division of Johnson & Johnson), in regard to their blood-thinning drug, Xarelto. The plaintiff claims that the drug caused her severe gastrointestinal bleeding.

The woman, who resides in Ohio, shared further details of her allegations within court documents. The documents note that she was prescribed the drug in order to avoid any blood clots and strokes due to her atrial fibrillation. Atrial fibrillation is a common condition which causes the heart to beat more rapidly than usual, and can put sufferers at increased risk for strokes or blood clots.

After using Xarelto for less than a year’s time, however, the woman suddenly experienced a severe gastrointestinal bleed, which she believes was caused by the blood thinner. Mounting lawsuits against Xarelto similarly allege that it puts users at increased risk for dangerous and uncontrollable bleeding events.

Xarelto launched onto the market as a revolutionary new blood thinner after its 2011 approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Association. Unlike other blood thinners released before it, Xarelto did not require users to maintain certain diets or visit their doctors regularly for monitoring. It also provided a one pill per day dosing for everyone, something that no other blood thinner has. These factors originally contributed to the drug’s popularity, however, consumers soon realized that the drug had some drawbacks which had received much less attention.

Today, many consider Xarelto to be the most dangerous blood thinner on the market. This is mostly due to the fact that the drug offers no available antidote. Plaintiffs allege that manufacturers were negligent to release the drug to the market this way, and note that these manufacturers have yet to provide an antidote.

Because Xarelto has no antidote, when patients using it begin to bleed, even a tiny injury can turn into a dangerous one. The patients can quickly experience uncontrollable bleeding, and doctors can do nothing to counter the drug and get the patient’s blood to clot. In these cases, doctors have to resort to extreme life-saving measures to attempt to keep the patients alive. They perform surgery or provide blood transfusions.

Traditional blood thinners do not have these same issues. They have an available antidote in vitamin K, which is why they often require special diets. When a patient using these blood thinners begins to bleed, physicians can administer vitamin K, countering the effects of the blood thinner and allowing the patient’s blood to clot. This antidote can mean the difference between life and death.
